A Distributed Control System, better known as a DCS, integrates traditional engineering tools such as PLCs/SCADAs into a single development environment. In contrast to a PLC/SCADA configuration, it also incorporates a central data base. This reduces the risk of mistakes and also shortens the development timeframe.
In addition, many integrated functions such as alarms, trending and logging are pre-programmed. Redundancy of servers and controllers is a matter of course. In addition, it is often easier to link DCS systems to parent systems such as MES or ERP.
DCS systems are employed in larger processes with many I/O and control circuits. In smaller processes, a DCS system is often of less interest due to the higher cost of the system. In this case, it makes more sense to go for a PLC/SCADA solution.
Batenburg has a great deal of experience with the application and maintenance of DCS systems, amongst others in the food processing industry, chemical sector, pharma and infrastructure. We will be pleased to consider the best solution for your project in consultation with you.
